Timber Marketing

The price of southern timber has increased dramatically in the past 30 years, making it imperative that the forest landowner get the best advice possible when marketing timber. Bennett & Peters can offer important marketing advantages to the timber owner:

  • An accurate estimate of the timber for sale. Each tree to be sold is carefully measured to determine its merchantable volume.
  • Knowledge as to which trees should be cut and when. We do not indiscriminately cut trees which are still growing at a good rate; but rather select those trees or groups of trees which should be cut because they are "financially mature".
  • Marketing each tree for its highest use. A potential pole is not sold as sawtimber and a sawtimber tree is not sold as pulpwood.
  • Proper sale timing. We do not hesitate to advise an owner that the time is not right for a sale, nor do we hesitate to advise when an offer is not up to par.
  • Finding the buyer who will pay the highest price. Most of the time this is accomplished through competitive sealed bids; however, there are instances in which a negotiated sale may be beneficial.
  • Dealing with only reputable buyers. We sell only to reputable buyers who can be counted on to operate in a proper manner.
  • Leaving the timber stand in better growing condition than it was prior to cutting. The next sale, in 5 to 10 years, should produce better timber than the first.
  • Preparation of the timber sale contract for the approval of the owner and his attorney. Our contract form was originally designed by one of the South's leading law firms and refined over 35 years.
  • Proper execution of the timber sale contract. We have the contract properly executed and, in most cases, collect payment in full prior to any cutting.
  • Supervision of harvesting. Our obligation does not end with the consummation of the sale. We supervise the harvesting of the timber to guard against contract violations and to attempt to keep unnecessary logging damage to a minimum.
